The 804 visa allows an elderly parent of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia as a permanent resident.
Applicants with this visa can stay in Australia indefinitely, work and study here and enrol in Medicare. Applicants may also sponsor family members to come to Australia and, if qualified, apply for Australian citizenship.
The 173 visa allows the parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or qualifying New Zealand citizen to stay in Australia for a limited time.
Applicants with this visa can stay in Australia for up to two years, work and study (without government support) and apply for a permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143).
